Older drivers on the roads up and down the UK are dispelling the commonly held misconceptions that they are slow and unsafe, according to the latest figures released.

Data obtained by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), under a Freedom of Information request, discovered that there are now over a million drivers on UK roads aged over 80-years old.

However, the same date showed that these older motorists are not one of the main causes of car and van insurance claims, as many people probably think.

The IAM found that the rate of collisions which result in injury to drivers is three times less for older drivers than it is for those under the age of 19.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said:  "Older people need their cars which give them better mobility and access to more activities and services. Those who wish to continue driving beyond the age of 70 should only be prevented from doing so if there are compelling reasons."

It was recently revealed by the DVLA that there are now five people in the UK who are driving over the age of 100, despite them having points on their licence.
