Van drivers in the UK could soon find that the roads are a much safer place, thanks to the introduction of a grant in Somerset, which will allow young drivers in the area to gain extra skills on the road through an advanced driving course.

The £75 grant will be available from the council, and will cover about 50 per cent of the overall cost of taking the advanced courses for drivers.

It is hoped that the scheme will make drivers across the country more attentive, meaning that there could be a reduction in car and van insurance claims as a result.

David Hall, cabinet member responsible for road safety, told This is the West Country: "About one third of all casualties on our roads are drivers aged between 17 and 24. It is therefore vital that we give young people in particular all the help they can get."

It was recently reported that young drivers living in rural areas are far more susceptible to having collisions than those elsewhere in the country.
