Thieves stole surveillance equipment from a parked van in Westcliff overnight, prompting an investigation from police, who are calling for anyone with information to contact them as soon as they can.

The equipment stolen was believed to be worth in the region of £18,000 as the thieves targeted the vehicle when it was parked in a car park overnight, leading to costly van insurance claims.

Police said it was not yet clear if the theft was the result of a target or was committed by opportunists.

PC Joe Hearn, the investigating officer, told Echo: "We're looking to speak with anyone who saw suspicious activity between midnight and 6am on that Tuesday morning."

Police have said that winter can be the most common time for van thefts, after it was revealed that in Bolton, 26 vans saw their catalytic converters stolen by people looking to cash in on scrap metal in just the space of a fortnight.
